"Yah happened at IBM in the 80's - but before I left they told many people in my building to thier face they were being laid off and to get thier last check. I think around 7000 were laid off in that round - I don't remember anyone getting shot up - a lot of them were very pissed - a lot lost thier lifetime expectations of nice retirements."

That layoff was probably somewhere in the "middle of the food chain" IE the laid off employees were treated with respect, given notice, probably had access to healthcare for a period of time, could collect unemployment plus had some severance from IBM. Compare that to what I have seen at fast food places, retail outlets, some construction companies, etc.. ... it's more like "don't let the door hit you in the azz on the way out.." I also know of situations in the lower paying job ranges where employers tried to have the employee denied any state unemployment benefits (by claiming the employee quit when they didn't) So people paycheck to paycheck (IMO) are generally treated much worse when they are given the boot than say oh... Carly Fiorina formerly of HP who made multiple poor decisions during her tenure and managed to get a rich golden parachute when she left.
