Waste Not, Want More

For 16 years, Intermech Machinery, a Singapore distributor and
manufacturer of industrial automation components, used a manual
system for tracking inventory and manufacturing processes. That
system gave the company very little visibility into its actual
inventory. Frequently, this lack of visibility prevented Intermech
from carrying out its first-in-first-out (FIFO) inventory policy,
created materials wastage and forced it to put outdated
components through costly tests.

To address this problem, the firm installed RFID antennas on
shelves and attached passive HF (13.56 MHz) RFID tags to most of
its products and components. The shelf antennas automatically read
the tags, thereby detecting the volume and age of the inventory
sitting on the smart shelves. Consequently, Intermech expects the
new system will reduce wastage costs by as much as 50 percent,
while boosting overall business productivity by 40 percent.

The company is so happy with its RFID system that it's now working
with its suppliers to determine how the technology can be used to
achieve even greater savings.
