Cyrix (I don't know about AMD, they haven't said about their merced strategy) thinks that it will take at least 2 years for the mainstream to even start to think about adopting IA64 and they are going to stick with 32bit for at least the merced generation and maybe one beyond.

Actually it looks like Intel themselves is having doubts about Merced now, since they are planning a traditional IA32 chip to be sold along side of it.. (go figure eh?)
