09/23: Applied Materials To Invest $77.3 Million in Taiwan Facilities
TAIPEI -(Dow Jones)- Applied Materials Corp. Tuesday said its Applied
Materials Taiwan unit plans to invest 2.21 billion new Taiwan dollars
($77.3 million) to set up manufacturing facilities in southern Taiwan by 2007.

The facility, which is in Tainan Science-based Industrial Park, will
provide key components for semiconductor-manufacturing equipment and
other related services.

Taiwan integrated circuit companies had announced a plan to invest more than NT$1.00 trillion to set up semiconductor production lines in Tainan in the coming years. This news has attracted providers of
semiconductor-manufacturing equipment, analysts said.

Taiwan has emerged as the fastest growing market for
semiconductor-manufacturing equipment world-wide. According to figures
provided by Semiconductor Equipment & Materials International of the
U.S., sales of such equipment to the Taiwan market is estimated to reach NT$80 billion this year.
