John, re: <<The conclusion is that we are going to have three standards for the next evolution of Socket 7:>>

Acually, much worse. Intel will have SLOT 2 for Deschutes, incompatible with SLOT 1 (That way they can sell a Deschutes upgrade module to replace your Pentium II for an extra $200 over price of Deschutes). And you thought you could just plug in a Deschutes 400 MHz into your Pentium II motherboard? He he he

Intel also has two new form factors for the Tillamook:
1. TCP (tape carrier package) puts the CPU on a piece of tape which is as small as practical. This means that future CPU's will not be compatible either physically or electrically.
2. MMO (mobile module) is a half inch thick daughterboard which includes the Intel chipset, cache and voltage regulator. According to PC Week (Sept 15 p. 48), it won't fit into notebooks thinner than 1.5 inches.

The bottom line: SLOT 1 has a lifetime of about ONE YEAR.

PS - You forgot about Intel's Socket 8 (Pentium PRO interface), introduced with much fanfare as the future CPU interface of all time. DEAD already.
