Art first I am no engineer only a QCOM investor with a sucessful history in QUALCOMM investing and I have been buying recently with enthusiasm. However in keepimg things real,Samsung unveiled its M8000 WiMax handset and claims it will have a dual-mode WIMAX/GSM handset, that work on both WiMax and GSM networks, and will be available worldwide. Is this vaporware? mobilewhack.com QUALCOMM with its action buying Flarion to solidify its own OFDMA patents ,giving them a core patent position in the upcoming Multiplexing Wireless Wars, speaks volumes to the validation of the mobile OFDMA threat to existing wireless technologies.I agree with you that it will take a long time to commercialize and implement WIMAX in a truly mobile enviorment and I love Andrew Seybold insight. "If WiMAX was, in fact, four times faster than existing technologies, I would say it has a chance. But I don't believe these claims and our research shows that WiMAX, EV-DO Rev A, and UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA are dead even when it comes to data speeds and capacity. If WiMAX was a true 4G technology, I would be excited about its chances for success. But it is not. It stacks up nicely against the incumbents, but it will eventually come down to device volume and pricing." My conclusion as an investor is that WiMax is a good niche technology, but it needs to be part of a broader platform and will need a CDMA backbone to work in a mobile enviorment.I am also a happy much more comfortable QUALCOMM shareholder due to the Flarion acquistion.
