But if we're going to use brute force, we need to finish the nest off, not just make them swarming mad

The problem is that those who are "swarming mad" don't make themselves convenient targets like the Nazis, gathering in one convenient country for us to bomb back to sticks and stones.

They are individuals, scattered across the globe, some more concentrated than others. Most aren't combatants - they are ideological fellow travellers and enablers. How do we exert overwhelming force on a non-combatant population in a friendly country, say Jordan, in order to "crush" the competing ideology? You can't. Not without being monsters. They will be swarming mad, but they probably would be mad no matter what we did. Better to make them swarming mad, and kill the ideologically committed that stick out their necks, than to go on in a slow burn in an untenable situation like before 9/11.

Creative destruction. We're shaking things up. Anger is unavoidable. We're not looking for short-term results. We're looking for a long-term fumigation, and that's gonna result in conflict.
