Actually, it could have been much worse for Israel. What if the IDF had actually gone in and then failed. What if, speculation here, the IDF had told the politicos that they couldn't win after all? What if?
This way, the country can save face, blame it on a politico or two, blame it on the UN, blame it on world public opinion, blame it on liberals in the USA and say it could have won if only.....
Israel has showed many of its cards and they don't look as good as people thought. Were they going to resort to nukes? Who knows?
At any rate, this is a way to get out of the corner they've gotten themselves into. I suspect the rightwing and, especially, the Neocon blame game will be raging if this goes through.
Now if only the US can find someone to blame for Iraq....hm.....

Were the Hashemites to control Iraq, they could use their influence over Najf to help Israel wean the south Lebanese Shia away from Hizballah, Iran, and Syria. Shia retain strong ties to the Hashemites: the Shia venerate foremost the Prophet’s family, the direct descendants of which — and in whose veins the blood of the Prophet flows — is King Hussein...."
