The current war on Lebanon fulfills an important, if overlooked, "psychological" goal as well.... Remember the trauma caused by Israel's withdrawal from Gaza. Only an Israeli PM the stature of Ariel Sharon could pull it off, and yet, the IDF's image was badly affected as Israelis watched their soldiers forcibly expelling Jewish settlers out of their Gaza dwellings.... It's clear that Olmert desperately needed a "good war" against an external enemy --against the Arabs, Israel's perennial foes-- to turn it around and rally the country behind the military... And opinion polls proved him right:
