Lief Erikson's old man had a Madison Ave. flair about him.

Greenland is a continental landmass in the northern Atlantic Ocean between Canada and Iceland, dominated physiographically by the 2nd largest glacier on Earth today. Recall that "Greenland is the icy one, and Iceland is the greeny one." Greenland got its name from early Norwegian immigrants, who picked the name Greenland as an advertising and marketing strategy, to encourage farmers from Norway to migrate there.

How Greenland got its name
Many people think it's strange that a country with so much ice has been named Greenland. Around 960, the Viking Erik the Red was banished from Norway, because he was too wild and warlike. He fled to Iceland, but he didn't get on any better there. In 985 he was made an outlaw - that meant that anybody was free to kill him if they wanted. Therefore, Erik the Red set sail for a land that he'd heard of, far to the west. He sailed and sailed and finally he reached the southernmost part of Greenland, where he spent the winter.

When he later returned to Iceland he told everybody about this wonderful and fertile country he'd visited and named Greenland. Erik the Red thought that people would be willing to travel to a new land if only it had an attractive name.
