That might very well be it though looking a little closer I have to seriously question it.

This is the sentence that made me wonder as the percentages don't agree with the YoY figures in the table at the end:

"An historic feat, Toyota, up 11.7 percent for the month, emerged in July as the No. 2 best-selling automaker in the U.S., surpassing Ford Motor Company (-35.3 percent in July) for the first time ever. Honda, with a rise in sales of 6 percent for July, slid into the No. 3 spot, skipping over Chrysler who suffered a 37.4 percent loss for the month."

I then checked unit sales for the two months:

theautochannel.com
usatoday.com

GM Ford Toyota D/Chrysler Honda
June 2006 413,473 269,404 223,018 206,748 126,449
July 2006 406,298 239,989 241,826 171,970 151,804

At least in terms of units this shows a decrease of 27,000+ units for July for the major manufacturers unless the small imports made of up for it which seems highly unlikely.
