Now Gelb sees the United States facing a decades-shaping battle for influence with Muslim extremists, one in which everyday people in the Middle East are deciding whether to cast their lot with America or the terrorists.

This is why Liberals can't be trusted to properly understand the nature of the fight against Islamic-Fascism.

Y'all think that this is going to be won in some manner like WWII.. Unconditional Surrender.. hip-hip hurrah, bring the boys home...

It's just not that clean and simple (although it probably could be if we just decided to commit to total war and devastate the entire region as we did in WWII, and then reshape in our own image).

The problem is not only political, its demographic, and socio-economic. There is a tremendous baby boom unway in the Mid-East amongst Muslims. And like our own baby boom experience, it's full of radicals and fanatics hell-bent upon confronting the current system. Except in this case, it's not a "progressive" radicalism that hopes to overthrow the conservative and reactionary forces, but just the opposite.

And it's going to take a generation to fully play itself out.

If y'all manage to get a candidate to occupy the White House, you'd better be prepared to understand that.

There are going to be more plotted attacks upon the US and other nations. And eventually one, or more, of them is going to succeed.

But for every one that succeeds, I can lay odds that there are dozens that will have been thwarted.
