a belief that it should have remained more focused on Al Qaeda and Afghanistan.

I may be mis-reading you and others here, but I believe you think we made a mistake going into Iraq. That's a defendable postion in hindsight. I can say easily now that we should have done for the Kurds what we did for the Northern Alliance in Afghanistan, and left Saddam to stew while we concentrated on Iran.

The mistakes made in Afghanistan were military ones, made by Central Command. Bush and Rummy were not to blame. They didn't understand what was being done wrong until it was too late. By then, firing Central Command was not a solution.

I have read just about all the available books on the subject, and believe the Institutional setup in the Admin at that time made getting Osama impossible. The Army Generals who had control just could not do what had to be done. It was not a matter of "pulling out to get Saddam." Our chance to get Osama was over by Jan first of 2002. Less than four months after 911.

But my main disagreement with the side that says, "Iraq is a mess" is that they don't have a different solution than what we are doing now. It's all political hackary from the left.
