I really don't get it. Since the invention of plastic bags, people have been able to carry around gels and liquids in things that don't appear to be gel or liquid containers. Since that other nitwit was trying to detonate his shoes, what's to stop anyone from carrying stuff in their underwear?

Nothing. There's also nothing to stop them from stuffing those liquid filled bags into the cavities of hair dryers.

Will air travelers have to don government issued jumpsuits and booties in order to get on a commercial airplane? Where does this stuff end?

No carry-ons and body scanners.

Isn't it so much more efficient to get cooperation from communities and do basic policework?

That's how the Brits did it.
