A Pew study on Muslim opinion mentioned in this months Atlantic Monthly is interesting - though it doesn't speak about US Muslims - its unlikely US Muslims are dramatically different than those elsewhere. To the question "Did Arabs carry out the 9/11 attacks?", Muslims in these countries said: Britain No 56% Yes 17% France No 46% Yes 48% Germany No 44% Yes 35% Spain No 35% Yes 33% Indonesia No 65% Yes 16% Egypt No 59% Yes 32% Turkey No 59% Yes 16% Jordan No 53% Yes 39% Pakistan No 41% Yes 15% Nigeria No 47% Yes 42% It appears obvious that about half the Muslims of the world - give or take 15% - can't admit what everyone really knows. Furthermore, the article said: Support for suicide bombing in defense of Islam is marginally lower among Muslims living in the West than elsewhere, but even so, 35% of French Muslims and a quarter of Spanish and British would countenance it under some circumstances. Maybe some of the Americans who have negative opinions of Muslims correctly recognize that a large percentage of Muslims hold opinions and emotions that are dangerous for the west. That is , a lot of them are nuts. And dangerous nuts - it is a fact that most of the violent conflicts that are ongoing in the world today involve conflicts between Muslims and neighboring peoples (whether Jews, Hindus, Buddhists, Christians, or pagans) or between Muslims and other Muslims. Suspicion isn't unwarranted, unfortunately. Americans who actually know any Muslims are more sympathethic. One of my closest coworkers for the past few years is a Nigerian Muslim. I like him and have a lot of respect for him as a person, but that doesn't cause me to be more favorable to either the Muslim religion or the majority of the worlds Muslims.
