Elroy..the Middle East has been at war for a long time, but I think in the last 5 years the people of the Middle East have been given MORE reasons to hate the U.S. than they ever had before.

I see it differently. As far as Iraq is concerned, I would say the Iraqis have been given in the past few years the opportunity to remove an unwanted dictator from their midst and live in a free, democratic society, the first in the ME outside of Israel, and in that effort the Iraqis are failing miserably.

Rather than build and support such a society the Iraqis are blowing each other up in suicide bombs in cafes, killing soldiers in roadside IEDs, and allowing thuggish Iraqi killers to have much more an influence on their daily lives than expected.

Each Iraqi that chooses to join a destructive "insurgency" (which is actually just a group of violent mobsters) rather than the Iraqi policeforce is essentially a failure of the Iraqis to take advantage of the opportunity given to them.

I consider it a failure of the Iraqi people, not the US. The US certainly has had lots of problems in its role in Iraq post-Saddam, but the success or failure of the mission rests in the hands of Iraqis.

They will live (or die) with whatever comes out of the situation in Iraq, we will eventually just up and leave.
