Pride was the initial reaction of a lot of Muslims - I don't know what percentage. But with time and reflection that after all it was a horrific crime which justified a military response and made Muslims look like something other than innocent victims, I think most decided its better to deny Muslim involvement.

Though not Muslim, I know of a few (I stress few) of the nuttier folk on the left who went through a similar process. 911 conspiracy theories replaced a view of the attack as the "revolt of September 11" by "the martyrs".
