It isn't a matter of reading someone's lips or opinions, it's a matter of facing an increasingly sophisticated attack coming from S. Lebanon.

They would not be facing that attack if they had not 'declared war' on Lebanon. Restraint was in order but because Ehud Olmert had to make a name for himself, egged on by Likud, he went the other way.

If we had had someone in the Whitehouse that understood diplomacy then we might have been able to make a fullcourt press on Syria a few years ago and avoided things getting to this point. But, as it is, Israel is paying the price for our country's incompetent foreign policy and they are reacting to it in the only way possible.

And what about Israel's incompetence? Why did they have to start a war because two soldiers were kidnapped. After all, Hezbollah and Israel have been taking potshots at each other for years.

And what about Israel's brazen decision to place its new nation in the middle of Muslim nations on Arab land? Why would anyone be so stupid? And its not like the Arabs didn't make their feelings clear before statehood.

That's not to say that I agree with the heavy handed approach Israel has taken towards Lebanon in general, but it becomes very difficult to deal with a kit-glove when your MAIN ally deals with a sledgehammer.

What the hell are you talking about??? Who has the sledgehammer? Hezbollah? If that's what you believe, then there isn't much use in having a discussion. Hezbollah is stronger than any of us believed but compared to the regional super power called Israel, they are a piker.
