Yeah, there is lots of that going on.

In the neighborhood where my wife grew up, a pretty dense in-town barrio with houses touching houses as far as the eye can see, all the new roofs and second story additions, and there very, very many of these are all associated with some family member working abroad somewhere. In fact, that is pretty much how the houses are identified: so and so works in Saudi, and those folks have a son working on a ship, ect.
