One of the arguments made by some of this third set of opinion holders on Iraq was that we shouldn't deplete our flexibility because we might have a greater need to take action later.

This sounds like one of the many discussions I have had with my friend, JohnM. The "Binary" objection was his favorite. It seems that one of the favorite ways those on the left use to avoid making a decision is to "nuance" it, and John is an artist at it.

One of the major reasons we crept into the Vietnam war was LBJ's attempt to nuance decisions. Never make a yes/no. Always make little creeping moves and they look up at the North and say, "had enough?" Of course, they never did. This slow escalation gave the impression that he was attempting to find a middle ground. But what it taught the North Vietnamese was that LBJ was a wimp. He wouldn't come out and make a decision, he had to be sucked into one.

Looking back it always was a go/no go. And Iraq was a go/no go. And Iran is a go/no go. We either will attack or we will not. We can decide to raid or occupy, but that is still part of the "go" decision.

I am still on the fence as to what to do. As I believe most here are. There is an impression on the the leftist and so called "moderate" theads on SI that we are all warmongers here, but that is not so. The difference is that we accept war as one of the solutions, while the other threads see war as never a solution, only a bad choice that should only be made when Democrats are in charge. :>)
