It you look up the term idealist you will see it is apt. The folks who spurred the cultural revolution in China were idealists too- idealism is not necessary a "good" or "peaceful" thing. I'd say Nazis were idealists- they had in mind a perfect society- it just happened to be Aryan, and they were willing to do anything to make their idea come true. I don't think you can get much more idealistic than that, can you? Look at the French revolution for some of the bloodiest idealists I can think of.

Calling someone an idealist is not being an apologist- unless people think the term only has positive connotations. Historically idealism has been associated with some of the greatest crimes against humanity. Idealism blinds people to suffering- the practical no longer matters (and suffering seams to be one of those practical matters that goes by the wayside.) Idealism seems to travel with zealotry- so I think idealism is a fine word to describe folks who put some strange religious or political mythic vision above the lives of innocent civilians. I think misguided is more problematic, since we generally think of misguided as meaning "mistaken" and the terrorists among us are not mistaken. The know exactly what they want, they just idealize and want something very different from what we want. So rather than misguided, what we have is "guided by an ideal that compels action which is completely at odds with the safety and security of people in the West". IMO
