I've been working all day on my notes for the trip that I took to the Lewis and Clark trail a week or so ago. I finished them and was feeling quite proud of myself, when I got this sad news.

To stand on the very ground the Lewis and Clark walked on and have it not very different from what they saw is a moving experience for me.

You can actually see the traces of travois that the Nez Perce used in their trips to the buffalo grounds in Montana. It looks very much like a jeep track, except that the parallel nature dissipates on side slopes where the travois slipped sideways.

A travois, for those who don't know, is a V shaped pair of poles with the apex held on a horse's back, with a load such as supplies, a baby, old person or other being dragged behind.
