"But Pulitzer Prize-hopeful EU blogger Gustave Jaeger writes that President George W Bush and vice president Dick Cheney were convinced that an unsuccessful Israeli bombing campaign against Hezbollah could legitimate Israel's security concerns and also serve as a prelude to a potential US pre-emptive attack to destroy Iran's nuclear installations."

Phil with a different philosophy thinks you give the Bush gang too much credit. They ain't that clever!

That said, when the time has come for military action against Iran, they will find a multitude of reasons which will no doubt include the Hezbolllah and Hamas and Syria, and some more WMD scares, etc.

A complete defeat of Hezbollah would not in itself have caused Iran to abandon its nuclear ambitions, or resulted in US'real to warmly embrace Iran.
