Krugman

I know it will ruffle just a few feathers to walk back to the topic of Paul Krugman, but bear with me just a minute.

On the topic of Krugman as an extremist. My position is that, in his economics he is a classic Democratic establishment type and in his politics, just a toke to the left of the DLC, neither of which gets him into the famed hall of "left wingers" let alone to the much more exclusive ranks of "extremists."

A bit of data. Krugman and Larry Summers were such stars of the MIT/Harvard economics crew in the early 80s that each went with whatshisname, the Harvard star economics conservative, to staff Reagan's economic council. That's right Krugman and Summers both worked for Reagan. Well, not really Reagan but you get the point.

Both were in line to be Clinton's chief economist when he was elected and both made major plays. I'm told that one of Krugman's major disappointments was not getting that. Particularly when whashername from Berkeley got it.

So hardly "left wing" economics, let alone "extremists."

As for his politics, they've been fairly consistent with his economics all along. He tagged GWB early as not a conservative in the traditional sense of that word, much more radical. And so wrote from the outset. Many of those early essays could have been short chapters in John Dean's new book on conservatives.

Just a thought or three.
