All of Kerry's purple owies were awarded over the objections of his superior officers; there is no disputing that. He had to steal them like a thief from Uncle Sam when his blatant attempt to retreat from Vietnam with an appearance of honor was failing. Why did Kerry receive a less than honorable discharge? Maybe it was because the Navy just wanted to be rid of people like him, and they did not recognize then that he was worth the effort to go through a courts marshal so they could award him a dishonorable discharge. If they knew then what we know, they would have done it.
