I assumed it was a combination of unease at delving in to an area that feels personal (which I'm calling politeness), combined with the cynical secret belief that he couldn't possibly believe what the fundamentalists believe (because the folks in the media would never believe it.) But that's just my suspicion. What do you think is the reason for a lack of doggedness on this topic?
