specialists themselves cannot do sh*t.

but, the popular trend is for insurance and mutual fund companies to
take over these so-called specialists or market making firms (such as
smith barney). by doing that, the MMs are geared with a high margin
war-chest with like 500 M to screw a stock.

no wonder, investing has been taken a higher realm. people just
got to get smarter in dealing with these market makers.
