something that causes the world to pause

That would be Ximain or at least the idea of Ximian.

I was so excited when Novell bought Ximian. I thought WOW! FINALLY someone is going to expend a little energy to put a decent front end on Linux! WhaHOOOO!

Nope! Opportunity squandered.

What Novell doesn't understand is how to design a front end. That's it period. If they did this company would have valuations like Google or Apple.

It drives me nuts. I wanted to get in the field but after I worked for a company with 43 million in venture cap and a great product that went down because they couldn't see the value of usability I gave up. It's damn frustrating. They would have been a billion dollar company now, if they would have listened to me and spend $3000 on usability testing.

But they were old glass room boys. "That designer is a artsy type!"

Arrogant.

Google ONLY has a search engine!

Novell has THE POTENTIAL WORLD WIDE OS in the palm of their hands!

-------

Like others I'm still running W2K on my windows box because I hate what they did with XP. Specifically registration. I hate registration of devices. I hate the idea of it. People hate the direction Microsoft is moving.

My Mac still doesn't have it DRM and I'm hoping it never will. But I would LOVE to have a usable Linux box too.

I LOVE the idea of open source. I LOVE the idea of OPEN OFFICE. I LOVE the idea of GIMP. I keep hoping... all in vain.

I love the idea that someday Photoshop will be bloated with stuff that the average guy will never need and that a reasonably facile Gimp user could easily get by without paying a tax to Adobe every 2 years for more bloat.

I wouldn't mind paying a few buck to Novell for support. Provided they put a little money into Ximian. There is a whole world out there beyond the US that does not want to pay a bunch of money for computers.

Really Novell could be the McDonalds of the computer universe if they only understood that they are standing on the one cash cow that could make them the #1 OS supplier in the World.

Put me in charge and I'll turn this company around.
