It sounds as if you are asking me if I believe in an absolute or situational morality. Like that ethics dilemma - if you had to kill your daughter to save a village, would you? Is murder ever justified?

I don't think I know what I would do. The question presupposes a knowledge of the realities, and as things happened, I don't think the facts were very clear at the time. So many Jews thought they were being relocated; so many Germans thought that, too. If you realized you were actually being exterminated by the millions, then certainly you would use any means necessary to survive. That's self-defense.

I've struggled with my own sympathies for the Palestinians, and my doubts about our ME policies. To a certain extent, I can listen without rolling my eyes to explanations about how they feel-- the defeatism, the helplessness, the no choice but death, but I also don't believe this is what drives the Bin Ladens. This is a sort of Westernized version we work with, the only way we can come close to comprehending terrorism, by turning it into a form of desperation. But they show no inclination to work WITH people for the survival of all, so my sympathies are - low.

I am rambling on... and really didn't answer your question.

The only certainty I have about murder is that I would kill anyone without blinking if they threatened my children.
