"And btw, don't you think the UN, and international community, bears much of the blame for this?"

Definitely, the UN and the west created Israel in a place that insured conflict.
Then the US and the west supported dictatorships and corrupt regimes throughout the Arab world and other places as well. That just exacerbated the problem.

"I don't think the Israelis are going to tolerate an Islamic State on their border fully mobilized to perpetuate a war of extermination against them. This would be essentially the equivalent of putting their backs against the wall.

Their backs are against the wall and have been for 2000 years."

"Which might suggest this latest conflict was only the opening round."

Just another round in a series which will end in a disaster.

"The UN had better pressure Lebanon to disarm Hizbullah, or they are going to get caught in the middle of a serious regional war."

That will happen when oil runs out. Then the US will be forced to withdraw support for Israel and the region will explode and no one in the west will care.
