WIN CE or NT 5.0 is more like it. When you say WIN 98 that means the OS that is designed to be a "Swiss Army Knife" of an operating system that must accomodate a multitude of old, new, and future software and peripherals. Just trying to tract and keep up with all the legacy hardware including driver support is mind boggling.

The WebTV is much more task oriented of a device, doesn't have to accomodate legacy hardware or programs, and is able to be controlled by a single company with the input of the licensees and support product companies. It's a much different platform than that for which WIN 98 must be developed.

I understand that WIN NT 5.0 may lend itself to being brought down to thin clients or embeded systems. You can realy look at the WebTV unit as being a thin client of the WebTV server. It will hold a tight OS and programs and download content off the internet via POTS, cable or POTS dirtected satelite downlink. I guess they plan to come out with an ADSL or HDSL version whenever that becomes feasible. (The US realy needs to immediately takeover the LECs via the right to eminent domain to force open competition and rapid build-out of ADSL as the cheaply offered interface - but that's a political issue that is far from happening).
