Yes. Most people were less reflexively ideological at the time. By the time of the convention, it was obvious that Hitler had control of Europe, and the predictions of the isolationists that he would be stopped Real Soon Now were all wet. So faced with the clear failure of previous policies, the Republicans of the time decided to live in the real world instead of keeping with their fantasies about how those failed policies were actually working and if only the media would report things in the right way....

Unlike today, the Republicans of that day found it harder to lie to themselves.
