Korean markets in the areas in question, I expect, are not like Korean groceries here in our burbs. At least the ones in underserved areas of DC aren't. They don't sell Korean goods. They sell canned spaghetti and cigarettes and iceberg lettuce and are indistinguishable from any other convenience store other than by the ethnicity of the proprietors.

All small businesses are local and they have to know their customers. But I think there are different business models that show differentiation.

Seven/Elevens and the chains have certain models and there may not be that much differences between stores.

The real stand alone locals seem to do the business in a smiliar fashion with each other.

The Korean markets have a semi franchise model. They may cater to the local clientele but may have access to (say) fresh vegetables that local, locals do not have. They may have access to a Korean community supply chain that the local locals do not have.
