Novell IntranetWare Scores A Win At UK College Of Law
Novell IntranetWare Scores A Win At UK College Of Law 09/24/97 LONDON, ENGLAND, 1997 SEP 24 (NB) -- By Steve Gold. Novell [NASDAQ:NOVL] has secured a major contract with the College of Law, the largest provider of legal education in Europe. According to Novell UK, the college is rolling out IntranetWare, Novell Directory Services (NDS), and ManageWise as part of a major project to transform the local area networks (LANs) at each site into a college wide network for both staff and students.
According to college officials, the network will initially serve 450 staff at the College's sites at Guildford, Chester, York, and the two London locations of Store Street and Breams Buildings.
Nick Galt, information technology (IT) manager at the college, said that the college evaluated a number of network operating systems but no other product came close to IntranetWare and NDS as an effective organization-wide network operating solution, "especially with regard to our key requirements of security and authentication of users, remote management and the ease of administration of a large network."
This is unusual, Newsbytes notes, as Novell has had a difficult time this last year persuading NetWare users to migrate to IntranetWare. Snaffling the College of Law for IntranetWare, then, is a major feather in Novell's cap.
Galt said that plans call for ManageWise to be used on all servers to assist in the remote management of the network, and is more efficient than in the past, "when we had to instruct support staff at each site to physically deal with any network problem that occurred; or in a worst case scenario, have network support staff traveling to sites to resolve problems."
The network will be expanded to encompass students across all sites with future plans for external links where such links would improve the quality of course delivery to students and appropriate information to law firms and governing bodies.
Further planned improvements to the network include the possible introduction of Novell's GroupWise and Internet access for students and staff. The college plans to implement a virtual private network (VPN) for all sites to support voice, data, and image (video and static) over the next 12 months.
Founded back in 1962, The College of Law is the largest provider of postgraduate and ongoing education for solicitors and barristers in Europe, running courses at four branches in Guildford, Chester, York, and London.
