That is because they screwed up their response. As Israelis have themselves noted, everyone was blaming Hezbollah for it, even the Arabs. The initial thrust to isolate southern Lebanon would have been acceptable if it had stopped their. They should have had boots on the ground within hours of the initial strikes and moved to ferret out Hezbollah and weapons. Then after a week or so, withdraw. That the world would have accepted. What happened went well beyond that.

Just look at what the Israelis themselves are saying.
