Now, in addition to trying to sell consumers extra-large gas guzzling SUVs and trucks, a North Carolina Ford dealer opens the largest indoor auto showroom on the East coast: Three acres under glass. Electricity usage will skyrocket at this dealership.

New Auto Showroom lets browsers stay inside
Crossroads Ford says its new Cary dealership includes the largest indoor showroom on the East Coast.

Spared from a baking sun and temperatures nearing 90, retiree Robert J. Chehoski was kicking tires in air-conditioned comfort at Crossroads Ford's mammoth new indoor showroom.

With about three acres of inside space, the company bills it as the largest indoor showroom on the East Coast. That suited Chehoski, because he could check out hundreds of shiny new Ford trucks, SUVs and cars without working up a sweat.

"Indoors is great," he said. "It's air-conditioned, and the roof keeps the rain off."

But with Ford sales slumping and most businesses scrambling to contain energy costs, the creature comforts that attracted Chehoski aren't without risk for Crossroads owner Glen Boyd.

The new building on Walnut Street cost $5.5 million. Nearly every competing dealer uses a much less expensive way of showcasing cars: outdoor parking lots.
