I can't remember the last time I saw okra in a supermarket. It's been more than a decade, for sure. I buy all my okra in international markets.

Once when I was doing what you were doing, picking along with several others from a big pile, an Asian woman of my vintage intervened and showed me via demonstration how to choose the best ones. She showed me how fresh ones snap when you press against the tips. I tried to explain to her how I pick them--I go for the little ones. I think she was a bit hurt that I did not switch to her method, but I want my okra intact so they don't ooze.

Which reminds me, when I had okra at the Afghan place, I noticed that they served it with the stem caps. Since they were covered by sauce, I assumed that they intended for their customers to eat them. I had never eaten the stem caps before but they went down fine so I guess they're edible.
