So what's the backlash a backlash against?

"Those <blanks> are ruining America!"

Over the years, the blanks would include:

Irish
Chinese
"coloreds"
Mexicans
etc
etc
etc

Now its gays...soon enough the knuckle-draggers will die out and no one will think a thing of giving gays basic human rights...it'll be on the next Others.
