Steel demand helps zinc players kick some goals

ZINC was a dog for such a long time that no one bothered looking for the metal, even if its status as the chief protector of steel said supply would need to keep pace with booming global steel consumption.

The net result of that has been booming zinc prices, a situation that will be driven home later this week when one of the world's biggest producers, Melbourne-based Zinifex, posts a bumper profit.

Zinifex and an increasing number of junior companies are now scrambling to come up with more of the stuff, as it looks as if out of all of the base metals, zinc's supply and demand fundamentals will keep prices strong.
