We are far from that. You and I would likely not survive 24 hours in a free country. We got a a very slight taste of what a free country would be like in New Orleans the day after Katrina.

We are nation of "law and order." Beyond that, customs, mores, and traditions regulate our conduct and behavior (or are supposed to, at any rate).

Your right to marriage is subject to the laws of the state you live in, and in none of the 50 states are you permitted to "marry whomever you please" -- period.

Of course, no law says we have to live in this country.
