NEW YORK (AP) -- Computer chip maker Advanced Micro Devices Inc. on Tuesday opened a multi-million dollar research and development center in Shanghai that will develop next-generation mobile platforms and test microprocessors.
The company said it plans to hire hundreds of workers, making the facility its largest system design hub outside the United States.

"The opening of the Shanghai Research and Development Center further expands our footprint in the region while enhancing our ability to serve customers and partners in China and around the world," Karen Guo, corporate vice president and president of AMD Greater China, said in a statement.

Shares of Advanced Micro Devices gained 55 cents to $23.95 in electronic premarket trading, having closed Monday at $23.40 on the New York Stock Exchange.
