In many ways the US and Israel have beome reactionaries in FP, at least in the sense that they are always reacting to the actions of others but in the larger sense as well. Reagans aggressive FP was taken to extremes by the neocons and the israelis promptly made the same mistakes. What is needed now is an overhaul not only of personnel but of the thinking that goes into making policy. US is fighting a two front war against two differnt types of islamic extremism. We know what al quaeda is willing to do. Iran/Syria and Hizbolla along with wannabee allies like venezuala seem to be following the NK model here using their oil dollars to their advantage. On one hand we have incent them toward moderation and on the other disincent them by getting the oil price to fall. Again, we can never, never negotiate with al quaeda but we should at least try with iran. Parse words with them for a moment and call hizbolla insurgents fighting assymetric war rather than terrorists. Israelis need to do the same thing. Trade and end to rejectionism and control of nuke ambitions for entry into the 21st century economic system and remove all existing US sanctions in existance. Put the hostage crisis in history and out of current events. Hell, if we could do all that with Kaddafi, we can try with iran IF THEY CHOOSE TO PLAY BY THE RULES.
