The Big 3 have just been doing the minimum it takes to meet regulatory standards for years Ford loses $5,000 on each focus it sells but makes $10,000 on each expedition. What would you "focus" on if you were Bill Ford? :-) For years, the biggest markets the japanese were selling into were in Europe and Asia where there were much higher fuel prices - they were doing "the minimum" in the full size pickup/SUV segments until very recently (and they made huge investments in that area just in time for the fuel price jumps).
