Other technologies born in cellular communications such as soft handoff will allow receivers to be controlled by broadcasters to automatically switch the receivers frequency to the identical broadcast stream on a different frequency as the receiver moves from town to town. Much like SDAR receivers do.

A while back there was talk of a consortium of digital radio stations to create an SDAR-like service over a wider area, providing a range of digital channels (a much smaller number, of course). Haven't heard any more about it, but from a technical standpoint it surely shouldn't be difficult; working out a business model might be something else.

But for now, they still have some of the same problems existing terrestrial broadcasters do, and I'm not sure how they get around those.
