Don despite what David Bowie* says there is still plenty of money to be made on recordings.

What is happening is that Hollywood has not yet worked out the new economics of the market right now. They are locked into the old mentality of making money off music.

I'll give you an example:

There are now 4 main commercial types of recordings: Downloads, traditional CDs, SACD (5.1 & 7.1) and DVD Audio. (Allen will correct me if I'm wrong.) However vinyl is actually still being pressed. Some CDs are hybrid, they play in both normal stereo and SACD. Most people don't know you can play CDs on many DVD players and listen in surround sound. Hollywood has not a clue as to how this will all work out.

As I pointed out on entry before you can buy a lot of CDs online for $.75 plus shipping. This is why NEW CD sales are down.

But some bands are starting to "get it." For example most of the smart bands are now issuing "remastered" CDs. Audiofiles will buy these even if they are not demonstrably superior to the original CDs. Purely out of fear of getting a "bad" recording. Many newly issued CDs have extra tracks. Mostly junk tracks. However both of these compete quite well with used CDs.

This whole matter is not yet settled. Downloading will not capture the whole market. There are going to be some big changes coming soon. You'll see. I hope to be part of it.

*Bowie said that professional musicians are going to have to like to tour, a lot, to make it in the future.
