"general ignorance is something that needs to be overcome as well." We cannot kick the oil habit in the short run. We can produce energy from alternate sources in the medium term. Why are we not going after the problem on overtime? As the price of oil rises alternate sources will become more viable and the US may lead the world in developing them. Did you know that China is the number one producer of solar water heaters?
