JF, Remember we produce ~40% of the oil we use.

That's cool, let's open up more of the Gulf Coast and Alaska for oil exploration and drilling. Add conservation technologies and a push toward mass transit and carpooling, and we'll probably reduce our foreign oil dependence to 30%.

I'm all for that, but I'm wondering if we're hoping for too much with "energy independence." It's a noble goal, but pragmatically what's that going to get us?
