I agree it's a tough sell.

And the physical engineering is the reason Apple hasn't put one out yet despite the pent up demand. But Apple made a deal with HOLLYWOOD for god's sake. That had to be tougher than the phone companies.

Here's what makes me think they are going to do it:

Remembering all the button functions on an unchangeable hardware keyboard is too hard and unnecessarily complex for most people. Apple is all about making things easy. Software, menus and everything else Apple is great at would be much better. You can have different controls for each use. Camera, Music, Phone, email, chat and web.

Camera in particular comes to mind. A BIG screen to see what you are pointing at and a big button to snap pix. Different screens to set the camera prefs. Way easier than trying to press a long stream of abstract buttons.

Right now consumers are forced to use the same interface for all their needs/apps. That interface was never intended for all of these uses AND MORE TO COME. Touch makes changes in interfaces easy for designer/engineers. Better controls and better use of scarce real estate for controls.

Touch feedback is great on buttons but Apple can alleviate this to a large extent with sound feedback or voice feedback. In fact hearing voice dialing feed back on a cell phone would be better than feeling one TINY button squished in with dozens of other.

In fact come to think of it I have this problem with TV remotes ALL THE TIME. Touch screen would work here much better too, especially in dim light with lighted screen.

Maybe an Apple Phone/Music/TV remote?

From a pure usage level, a totally touch sensitive screen with no physical buttons will make it very hard to juggle things like dialing when doing something else. The room for error in selecting the wrong number or function to activate will give people migraines or cause accidents if driving.

Well that depends. You shouldn't be driving while using a cell anyway, it's like driving drunk. It might be harder but not if you have voice controls too which is likely. You can't really have effective voice controls unless you have "scroll up" or the equivalent can you? (I'm not sure.) Processors are getting faster and faster.

If you are talking about doing something like listening to music and chat, having different screens would be much better.

We'll see. Just having fun.
