08:13 SUNW Sun Microsystems shines again in server market - WSJ (4.63 )
WSJ reports Sun Microsystems took back a sizable chunk of the market for server computer systems used by businesses in the second quarter, according to data from mkt researcher I.D.C. Sun's total server rev rose 15.5% to $1.58 bln in the quarter. Its share of the mkt was 12.9%, compared with 10.8% in the first quarter. Sun, which has also boosted its sales in the first period, also regained the No. 1 position in sales of Unix servers in the latest quarter. Overall, Sun was No. 3 in server rev. Intl Business Machines (IBM) was No. 1, with 31% of the server mkt, despite a 2.2% rev decline from the year-earlier period. Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) continued to hold the No. 2 spot, with 27.8% of the mkt, on a 1.7% drop in rev. Dell (DELL), the No. 3 vendor in the first quarter, slipped to fourth place in the second quarter. Its latest server rev declined 1.3% to $1.27 bln from the year-earlier period. Advanced Micro Devices' (AMD) Opteron accounted for 20.2% of x86 server rev in the quarter, up from 17.1% in the first period and 9.5% a year ago, I.D.C. said. The chip maker's Opteron chips have held a performance edge over Intel's products, though the larger co has closed that gap with chips that went on sale this summer. |
