With their expertise in product and interface design, and with components available from third parties, I'm sure Apple could put a swinging cell phone together.

I'm sure.

On a related note, but possibly off topic for Apple (or maybe not), I'll bet there is a ton of pent up demand for a very basic simple to use cell phone that is not a camera, not a music player, not a game device, all it does is just ... make phone calls (and receive them :-)) Oh yeah and has excellent reception and battery life.

I just know so many people who can barely use their phone who would love something like that. You know who - the ones who are not good technologically , for example when using a PC they want to know "where's the any key?" and ponder the answer to the eternal question: "when I reboot my PC, why does the cup holder go away?"

For cell phones:
(Hold down the 1 button and you get one. hold it down for 3 seconds and you get voice mail ------"whhaaat?" OK here smash it with a hammer and it initiates self destruct sequence)

Bet Apple could come up with something great for people like that if they get into cell phonery.
